Imprints of an Era with Craftsmanship Preserved | Crown Hour x WMT Pay Tribute to Hong Kong’s Traditional Shanghai-Style Barber Culture
The wheels of time turn silently. With the slated redevelopment of Choi Hung Estate, Wah Lai Beauty Parlour, a beloved traditional Shanghai-style barber shop which has accompanied the neighbourhood for over 60 years, has begun its countdown to closure. Those vintage hydraulic barber chairs, the heavy metal hairdryers wielded by former Shanghainese barbers, and the steaming-hot white towels stamped with blue lettering... These are the quintessential symbols of sophistication and romance belonging to the gentlemen of old Hong Kong.
To preserve the warmth of these cherished memories before this landmark bids farewell, the Crown Hour team has joined forces with local watch brand WMT to craft the "Wah Lai 1964" limited-edition timepiece. More than just a watch, this is a dedicated "time capsule" for Hong Kongers. We have transformed the grooved texture of the barber chair footrests into hour markers, engraved the ventilation grilles of the old-school metal hairdryer onto the case back, and boldly integrated a Chinese-numeral date window onto a warm silver dial, taking local nostalgia to its absolute pinnacle. Furthermore, we have quietly tucked a hidden surprise among the watch accessories that echoes the historic footprints of the old parlour, waiting for you to uncover and smile upon unboxing.
Though physical landmarks may eventually vanish, we choose to immortalize this Wah Lai (magnificent) era on the wrist through the rhythmic ticking of time.
Strictly limited to 100 pieces worldwide. A heartfelt farewell and tribute to our Wah Lai years of the past.
